Theresa Strolberg

July 18, 2008

Strolberg uses no chemicals to control weeds or insects, or to add nutrients to the soil of her 1-acre garden. But, Theresa will describe her produce to you as ‘natural’, not organic. This is because the organic certification program is costly, and doesn’t stand up to her more stringent values.

Her garden provides food for her family for all year, and she puts up many items, canned, preserved or otherwise. She attends the Ketchum Farmers Market and the Twin Falls Markets too. She has been growing for roughly 30 years, and lives nearby Buhl.

Traditional garden vegetables are to be had at her stand, as well as wine grapes, plums and peaches. Walnuts, chutneys, whole grain breads and fruit pies are also some delicious items she sells. The pies use only her own honey as a sweetener and have whole wheat crusts. They are individually-sized and seem like a radically improved version of toast and jelly.

When she’s not in her garden or kitchen, Theresa may be voicing her concerns about chemical spraying over at the town hall, or State legislature. As for upcoming projects, she has collected numerous testimonies from persons who have been exposed in a variety of manners to pesticides and herbicides. A book idea is taking shape . . .

Big Lost River Meats

July 9, 2008

Lin Hintze of Big Lost River Meats kept busy this winter by attending food shows in Washington D.C. He represented his county (Lemhi) as a commissioner and as a food seller.

If you haven’t yet paused at his booth, you’re missing out on a classic taster experience: sausages galore on toothpicks! From Italian to feta cheese varieties, Brats and more, Big Lost River Meats offers sausage made from chicken, pork, buffalo and lamb. Hintze also sells in Idaho Falls, Pocatello and Boise farmers Markets.

Claiming that Markets are the only way to go for his business, Hintze operates with natural practices. His smoked products do have sodium nitrates.

Nancy Liston – Liston Studios LLC

June 16, 2008

Hello All! My name is Nancy Liston and I am the proud owner of Liston Studios, LLC and Liston Artistry. My involvement with the Farmers Market was an idea I stole from fast food restaurants: “Do you need a plate (fries) to go with that?”. Okay, let’s forgive the improper English, and that fast food has absolutely nothing to do with the gorgeous fresh food from the market. It just seemed a perfect fit.
My product shown at the market is a platter collection that changes with the seasons. Each piece is hand-painted in my studio, located in Hailey, Idaho. I also sell platters around the intermountain west. Presently, I am expanding the business to include Liston Artistry, which sells directly to five diamond hotels and custom requests.
Sometimes I can wrangle my sons to help set up the market fair. The production is entirely my own, and if I have any time to spare it’s spent snowboarding in winter. Summers are a blur.
I love the market. The vendors. The customers. The dogs. The children. The fresh mountain air. I hope you’ll stop by to visit me and see my artistry on platters! Regards, Nancy Liston

Carol Rast – Prairie Sun Farm

June 3, 2008

Fairfield is home to Prairie Sun Farm, and Jeff and Carol Rast. What began as a backyard garden passion for them eventually grew into over a 1-acre garden. Specializing in items ideal for farmers market and restaurant sales, you’ll find Carol in a protective sun bonnet every Tuesday at the Ketchum farmers market.

Using natural methods (strictly organic, but not certified on paper), she and Jeff engage in sustainable land practices. Wise resource allocation is their priority.

At her table you can expect to find lettuce, mixed greens, radishes, several varieties of herbs, some eggs, jellies, jams, honey, small loaf breads (the Pumpkin chocolate-chip sells like hotcakes), and even her own dog treats. Come late June she’ll also have peas, beans and strawberries. Tiny cups of cherry tomatoes arrive in August, despite her allergy to tomatoes (she wears plastic gloves to pick and sell them!).

Make sure to purchase a big bag of her carrots – many of her vegetables and herbs are heirloom and specialty varieties. The carrots are so naturally sweet they are the perfect afternoon snack.

During the winter, Carol teachers Kindergarten through 8th grade in Fairfield, where Jeff also coaches and teaches. She also currently sells through Idaho’s Bounty, and to several restaurants in the Wood River Valley.
