September 9th – Hailey Market

Hailey features the perpetual market favorite The Mighty Shims featuring Fletcher Brock, Jim Paisley and Chip Booth play an eclectic mix of Americana, from swamp to Indie garage, 30′s swing to folk, contemporary ballads to pop interpretations, some blues and a good dose of originals.

This weeks featured vendors – whom you may find at both Ketchum and Hailey.

Fair Mountain Farm

Tona and Clarence Stilwill have been farming at 5,000 feet on a 120 year old homestead for 11 years and believe the work they do honors all of those who have passed this place into their hands. This year Lynea Newcomer joins Tona and Clarence on the farm and at the market.

From their farm at the base of Soldier Mountain their produce travels one hour, and typically is harvested within 24 hours of delivery — we harvest by hand–selecting the best quality available. All of their vegetables are chemical free, grown with sunshine and pure water only. Everything is washed. Clarence and Tona stand unequivocally behind everything we produce. Enjoy!

Sun Valley Remedies

The idea for Sun Valley Remedies came about simply out of need. Alison has been practicing Massage Therapy in the area for over 10 years, and has extremely sensitive skin. After trying many products, she realized that there wasn’t anything out there that was up to her standards, at an affordable price. Alison has found these products to be beneficial to all skin types, in all climates.

Her products come in two forms either Jojoba blend or creamy lotions. The jojoba blends are made of jojoba, wheat germ oil (preservative), essential oils of (depending upon blend) and the creamy lotion blends containessential oils (depending upon blend) are added to purified water, organic aloe barbadensis leaf juice, organic sunflower seed oil, octyl palmitate, emulsifying wax N.F., vegetable glycerin, organic extracts of:lavender flower, calendula officinalis, white tea, german chamomile, and arnica montana flowers. Alison uses only 100% certified organic ingredients. I try to keep my formulas as simple as possible. This simplicity helps reduce the likelihood of exposure to irritants.

Sweet Indulgences

Kristy went to culinary school in Singapore for a year and worked at an Italian Restaurant Zambuca. Since returning to the Wood River Valley, she has worked at several restaurants, and is currently at Cowboy Cocina. Kristy enjoys baking for the Hailey Farmers’ Market and being part of the local food scene. Kristy is interested in Italian breads and desserts and each week she tries a new recipe along with her splendid variety of cookies, cakes muffins and breads. Stop by Kristy’s booth in Hailey and indulge yourself with something deliciously tasty and sweet.

He is entertaining and multi-talented playing a wide variety of instruments and interacting with both kids and adults as he engages folks to pick up an instrument and play along. You will most likely be familiar with many of Mr. Cappi’s songs as you join in the fun of singing and playing symbols, drums, bells, blocks and more.

Chef Demonstration at the Hailey Market

Becky Ludwig, private chef extraordinaire will prepare tasty samples for our customers to enjoy at the Hailey Market this week.  Becky owned Place several years ago with her husband Steve and now is a private chef.  Becky enjoys serving local produce whenever possible. She will make a local tomato panzanella and a chilled melon soup at the Thursday market.

M & M Heath Farms

M&M Heath Farms grows several heirloom varieties and has diverse types of potato (16 varieties), 10 varieties of winter squash, 14 kinds of tomatoes (including 7 heirloom varieties) and several types of summer squash, cucumbers, peppers, lettuce, beets, swiss chard, herbs, onions, fresh beans, dry beans, sunflowers, hay and grain. They raise organic beef, pork, chickens and other poultry, and eggs and produce organic seed and look forward to providing a local source to other growers and their livestock live a good healthy life with plenty of pasturing and exercise.

Shooting Star Farm

Using natural methods (not certified organic but basically organic methods, Carol and Jeff from Shooting Star Farm engage in sustainable land practices.wise resource is their priority along with a couple of greenhouses that have allowed them to grow tomatoes and peppers in areas where frost may occur any night of the summer. At Carol’s booth you can find lettuce, mixed greens, radishes, several varieties of herbs, eggs, jellies, honey, small sweet loaf breads, and dog treats. In late June she has peas, beans and strawberries. Cherry tomatoes arrive in mid-July, along with onions, squash, peppers, and beets. Be sure to purchase a bag of her sweet carrots, many of her herb and vegetable varieties are heirlooms.

Shooting Star Farm

Dan Freeman and Carol Murphy are behind the scenes of Shooting Star Farm, which is located on the North side of Hailey. The farm is a one-acre cornucopia of vegetables, including lettuce, tomatoes, squash, pea shoots, kale, Swiss chard, spinach, carrots, and radishes, plus a small house for our family of four. They have been growing delectable vegetables for ten years, and have cultivated their soil by enriching it with organic compost. Shooting star Farm has never applied a single chemical to the soil or plants; nor any pesticides, herbicides, or insecticides. Simply sun, soil, seed, water and hands; the way food was meant to be grown.
They are particularly known for their delicious greens Kale seems to be a particular favorite of local restaurants and an enviable variety of tomatoes. The local chefs and Farmers’ Market customers eagerly await our first crop. The cool nights at 5400 feet ensure that our lettuce is mild and tasty all summer, and our greenhouses made from reclaimed lumber harbor our flavorful tomatoes.

Scott Mason of the Ketchum Grill

We are excited for another great week at the market with some great music & chef demonstrations! Those that have been waiting patiently for the heirloom tomatoes to arrive will be happy to see them showing up at vendor booths along with melons & peppers as well as corn, zucchini, squash & more.

In Ketchum on Tuesday will be featuring a chef demonstration by Scott Mason of  The Ketchum Grill. Scott has long been an active member of our culinary community and a big supporter of our regional & local suppliers of food & produce. Come check out Scott preparing creations available directly at Tuesday’s market.

Tuesday featured music brings the folksy guitar songs of  multi-talented local Randi McEntee playing a variety of originals and covers.

In Hailey on Thursday brings the special musical treat of a pared down, acoustic Four Stroke Bus – fresh from their amazing performance at last weekends Northern Rockies Folk Festival. Come early & stay late!  The Artist’s Market offer a variety of wonderful art & crafts sourced locally as well – so you can find everything you need. Or if you just want to sit in the shade and enjoy some tunes we’ve got that too.

Brooke Hovey of Glow Live Food Cafe

We are happy to be having our first guest chef of the summer at the Ketchum market this week. Brooke Hovey from Glow Live Food Cafe will be demonstrating bountiful salads, sprouted nut and seed creations, green smoothies, and decadent desserts. Brooke has lived in the valley for 15 years as an endurance athlete and private chef.  She has always had a love of food that nourishes the body, energizes the spirit and brings the community together with the local farmer’s market.  As a mother of 2 small children, Brooke creates meals and snacks that encourage them to crave vegetables, sprouted grains and whole foods.

Music this week features the return of Andrew Toft and his fine fiddle playing in Ketchum and in Hailey Dan Freeman, who is also one of the our market vendors (Shooting Star Farm), will be playing electric guitar, banjo, and various voices on the keyboard including bass, drums and sax. These sounds are layered with creative use of a looper, providing backdrop for strong vocals and lead guitar. Songs are selected from blues, traditional, bluegrass, country and rock. Joining Dan will be Aquila Kashino who brings unique passion to his harmonica playing.

Look for more fruits arriving this week as well as some vendors carrying potatoes, broccoli, peas, cucumbers, zucchini, squash & more.

This weeks music features All Night Dinner in Ketchum on Tuesday – All night Dinner evolved out of the and Hickory Blue and has added some new rich vocals. Some of its performers have been performing in various groups around the valley for over 25 years. With Craig Meyers on guitar and vocals, Ned Wheeler also on guitar and vocals, Brad Pearson on bass and vocals, Jason Vontver on percussion, Heidi Hogan and Cindy Solvang on vocals this group is ready to rock you with blues, and rock standards.
In Hailey on Thursday Andrew Toft brings his fine fiddle playing up from Twin Falls and we are very pleased to have him back.

Don’t forget that at both markets we strongly encourage you to bring a re-usable bag and if you need more we have our colorful red ‘Just Bag It’ tote bags available for $1 from the market manager or our vendors. Also Ketch’ em Alive starts their 2nd week of free concerts at Forest Service Park. Pick up a picnic at the market before going to the show.
